Doula is a Greek word meaning, “woman serving woman” or, “one who mothers the mother.” A Doula is woman who understands the birth process and supports women as they make their transition into motherhood. Typically, she will meet with the couple before the birth, during and post-partum. She will answer any questions or concerns, assist with writing a birth plan, and help the couple prepare for labor and parenthood.
During labor, a Doula provides emotional support, physical comfort, and an objective point of view. She will help the woman get the information she needs to make informed decisions and help her communicate her needs and desires effectively to other care givers. A Doula also supports the father or partner, allowing them to participate more fully in the birth experience. After the baby is born a Doula remains in contact with the family helping them adjust to their new roles.
Doulas recognize childbirth as an important event in a woman's life, an experience she will cherish for a lifetime. Imagine having someone willing to uplift, encourage, and empower you to make your birth a wonderful experience?
